South Korea v Bahrain

The 2011 AFC Asian Cup continues on Monday in Qatar with the second Group C game of the day between South Korea and Bahrain at the Al Gharafa Stadium in Doha.

South Korea automatically qualified for this year’s tournament thanks to their third place finish in the 2007 finals. They have a good record in the 55 year history of the competition, winning it on two occasions (1956 and 1960), finishing runners-up no less than three times (1972, 1980 and 1988), and finishing third another three times (1964, 200 and 2007). Thanks to their recent prominence in international competitions, including the FIFA World Cup, South Korea are definitely considered one of the favourites to lift this year’s trophy.
Bahrain’s only taste of relative success in this tournament came in 2004 when they managed to place fourth. The Bahraini’s qualified for the 2011 competition thanks to a second place finish in Group A with twelve points, three behind group winners Japan.
